What Is Art For?

Hey there Reader!

Do you wonder where art fits in your life? Some of this week's links might be of service:

  • How my illustration book is going. I am plugging away at translating this old puritan book. I've barely drawing. It's long. The excitement has worn off. But I'm trying to chomp at it a little bit each day. Trusting the compounding effect. Check out the artsy stuff I've learned this week.
  • How Barnes & Noble transformed. Perhaps you've realized the beloved Barnes & Noble's bookstore has had a transformation the last few years. There's a reason for that. I love this story of transformation and the power of curating a context for others.
  • What is art for? I appreciated this overview answering the question. It reminds me of the time Bill Murray said a painting saved his life.
  • Finding arts communities. I never would have guessed that online communities would have been a thing 10-20 years ago. But they are. Here's a few I've benefitted from: Swing Higher (for kids book-makers), The Rabbit Room (if you love C.S. Lewis-ish stuff), School of Visual Storytelling (visual artists), Makers & Mystics, Global Ethnodoxology Network. Are you apart of any? I'll share 'em!
  • Music's effect on your brain. Something powerful happens when we learn musical instruments. For a snippet overview, check this out.
  • Reading the Bible when no one reads. This podcast episode has lots of wins, but a few misses. I think the arts and mission community should speak louder with this topic. I'd love your reflections back on this if you've got them!
  • The Imagination is the Gateway to Empathy. W. David O. Taylor has some insights on the matter here. Understanding the imagination has expanded my disciple-making efforts in every way.
