Worship and Culture

Hey there Reader!

The nations have much to teach American believers about the mission and worship. Take a look at this week's nuggets:

  • "We can pioneer with the Lord." Josh Garrels speaks! If you've ever heard of have been interested in his music, you'll enjoy some of his perspectives on faith and art over at Christianity Today.
  • Zoom call: Being an artist missionary. May 10, United Adoration will be hosting a live zoom call. Explore how their ministry uses arts in missions. Join here May 10!
  • Painting a casket. Makoto Fujimura painting his mother's casket. Mako: My brother asked “How are you going to keep the painting?”. My answer: “The whole point is for my art to be incinerated with her.”
  • Proverbs in missions. Humanity was made for proverbs! From churches, families and parents, to examining proverbs in C.S. Lewis' writings, God has used proverbs to pass on wisdom since antiquity. This becomes even more amplified on the mission field in oral cultures. Missionaries have thought long and hard on how to study and utilize local proverbs in the mission field. Also, take a look at this case study in Africa by W. Jay Moon.
  • Nairobi Statement on Worship & Culture. For all my worship leaders out there, you'll want to familiarize yourself with this statement. I have found that it provides a release valve on common pressures American worshippers and worship leaders face today.
  • Innovative art. Ok, this is a total brag...But Starbucks just opened their first 3d printed store in our town (Brownsville, TX)! ALSO, a fellow Yellow Ochre member took these photos. Brag, brag, brag.
