Advice For Artists By C.S. Lewis and Tim Keller

Hey there Reader!

This week, I came across several encouraging remarks for artists:

  • Tim Keller on Creativity and Creation. My ears perk whenever I come across any bible exhortation from. Tim Keller to artists. The Gospel In Life podcast just posted a handful of Keller teachings particularly potent for artists: Creativity and Creation, A Vision for Culture Making, Our Work And Character, and Why Tell Stories?
  • The Time for Orthodox Art is NOW. While you may or may not agree with where iconographer, author, and public speaker, Jonathan Pageau, lands in his talk (also in podcast form), you might resonate with how he unpacks the problem of the arts today. Here was my favorite quote where he talks about deconstruction of Modern Art: "When something decomposes, it becomes earth in which to plant a new seed."
  • Redeeming Local Arts for Kingdom Witness. Brazilian ethnoarts missionary, Héber Negrão, serves as the new president for the Global Ethnodoxology Network (GEN). In this recent Lausanne Movement Podcast interview, Héber shares many helpful introductory remarks about Ethnodoxology and Missions.
  • The Tool Man reads Romans. I could have said, "Buzz Lightyear reads Romans," but I'm a 90s kid, so this felt more fitting. Tim Allen has recently been publicizing on X about his recent walk through in the Bible. He's now in the middle of Romans. I just thought this was so cool!
  • C.S. Lewis' advice for artists. While he was speaking directly about writers, I loved coming across this Lewis quote: "The world does not need more Christian literature. What it needs is more Christians writing good literature."
  • Terrible advice creators and writers fall for. Nicholas Cole calls it a mistake when artists fall into the trap of merely trying to "find" their niche. He proposes five questions to best "discover" your lane as an artist. I wish this was shared with me twenty years ago!
