What Is Pop Culture Telling Us About Ourselves?

Hey there Reader!

Wherever you find yourself in the mission, did you know it's good to be an artist in the kingdom? In the months curating this newsletter, I have found myself so encouraged by how many ways God is using the arts in the world today. Be of good cheer fellow maker!:

  • What is pop culture telling us about ourselves? For anyone who enjoys helpful cultural commentaries, I've got podcast episodes for you. The first comes from Deep Talks host, Paul Anleitner who unpacks what he calls "Metamodernism." Don't be fooled though. He gives context for Fight Club, The Office, The Matrix, and more. The second is Jonathan Pageau who breaks down the hit show, Severance.
  • How do they make paint brushes? At least for this series of brushes, check out this 2,000 year old Chinese tradition showing how.
  • Some of my favorite online painters. If you are into (or looking to get started) visual arts, I've compiled my list of my favorite online teachers to learn painting from. Even though I studied illustration, I found myself learning more from these excellent instructors.
  • Global Arts and Missions in a Polycentric World. Ethnodoxologist, Héber Negrão, recently wrote this piece asking how we can shift our approach to using arts in missions. If there are now multiple global centers for Christianity, we can no longer export American arts alongside an American gospel to the nations. Negrão makes the case for unleashing local arts in a world of polycentric missions.
  • Zoom call: Arts in missions across Europe. If you're interested in learning how the Lord is using arts in missions across Europe, you might want to join in on this zoom call May 5 with Arts+.
