Weekly arts engagement inspiration from Matt Taylor. *Painters use mid-tone colors, such as yellow ochre, to prime their canvases. This helps get over the initial hump of beginning the painting.
Hey there Reader!
Our family is all moved up from Texas to the Midwest. It'll take time now to adjust, but I'm glad to be engaging back with you all in Yellow Ochre World:
Thoughts on home studios. Ok, so a move across the country means a fresh start to a home art studio-library-office. I have several "itches" I'm trying to scratch: a place for my full-time job, for art making (songwriting, painting, writing, etc.), for digital art making, for kids to make/play, for books, for dreaming (white board), for guests to stay, for inspiration. So far, here's my pinterest board with ideas. Between my friend, Ron's, new home office and Austin Kleon's home studio documentation, I'm feeling pretty inspired. One shift from previous studio spaces I've utilized before is I need everything out in the open: my paints, guitar, supplies, all of it. If it's out, ready to use, the more readily I will use it.
"Choose your fans, choose your future." Seth Godin makes an important distinction to Kevin Kelly's "1,000 True Fans" theory. He calls this, "1,000 Untrue Fans." From Godin: "When fans commit to a movement and help it grow, they benefit. Not every group is going to become a movement, but if we don’t bring others along, we’re not going to make a change happen. Movements move."
The Psalms were for exiles. I've been in the Psalms for a while, so this hit a sweet spot. Brandon O'Brien (co-author of Misreading Scripture With Western Eyes), recently reshared a reflection on the Psalms during the Pandemic: "the book of Psalms—was used long ago by exiles who weren't allowed to worship in their Temple."
The Artist's Mental Health Checklist. Chad Karger shares this checklist over on the Rabbit Room. Artists serve others out of the comfort by which we've been shown by Christ through others. So it is fitting we are getting serviced in order to be a blessing to others.
Why Ed Sheeran refused to meet Eminem. When it comes to art-making, sometimes it is best to let our creations build the trust. Ed Sheeran intuitively knew this in this story about waiting to meet Eminem. "My rule is I am never going to seek out someone [my heroes] to meet them. I'm going to wait until they want to meet me."
