Soulcraft Woodworking Apprenticeship

video preview

Rodney Fickas owns and operates Soulcraft, a woodshop apprenticeship program in Ferguson, MO. If you sign up for a woodworking apprenticeship, Rodney has apprentices complete four projects:

  1. Something to keep: to remind you of a job well done.
  2. Something to sell: to remind you work is worth something.
  3. Something to give away: to remind you how others have given to you.
  4. Something to help someone else learn a craft: to remind you to multiply yourself.

Art is multi-faceted in uses. God has so designed it that our creations can serve multiple functions in our lives.

(H/T to Hugh Halter for featuring Soulcraft in his book, Righteous Brood).

The Worship Wheel

As a new believer, one of my greatest art-making blindspots was how limited my imagination was for using my art.

I thought that the mission of the Christian life was to evangelize. And since I was in art school, this (obviously) meant I had to use my art to share the gospel (so the logic went).

Here, the world of missionary veterans humbled me.

Missionary Ethnoarts veterans, Todd and Mary Beth Saruman, developed what they call “The Worship Wheel.” This helpful tool displays the wide range of using one's arts for the kingdom.

A powerful force of artistic ideas unleashed from me. I could write a book, paint pictures with my family as play, gift others a piece from my heart, suggest a well-placed song idea for the church’s liturgy, create courses with imaginative prompts for learners, make t-shirt design ideas, design rites of passage for my kids, make a lesson on hyper-realistic drawing at the drop of a hat for a European kids camp, facilitate a core plant core team how they might use art in their new church plant, and make infographics for mission agencies to communicate their ideas more clearly. The list continues to compound and grow with every year of my life.

Perhaps it will in yours too?

"No work of art is more important than the Christian’s own life, and every Christian is called upon to be an artist in this sense. He may have no gift of writing, no gift of composing or singing, but each man has the gift of creativity in terms of the way he lives his life."
